taking inventory business definition

Counting or weighing stock that is available for sale. Taking inventory allows a firm to determine if the amount of stock available for sale is within a normal range for its type and size of business. It can also help to pinpoint areas of concern when profit margins are unsatisfactory. For example, a grocer may determine it has been subject to employee theft.
