Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) business definition

A privately owned and operated financial institution created to provide equity capital and long-term credit to qualified small businesses. The program was created by Congress in 1958 to assist small businesses in obtaining financing that was unavailable through normal channels. SBICs can qualify for government-backed long-term loans.
