segmentation business definition

Grouping customers according to homogeneous attributes. For example, an automobile manufacturer with a full line of vehicles uses segmentation by income level in planning the marketing of its products. Small, entry-level vehicles are marketed to individuals and families with modest incomes, while wealthy individuals are market targets for the firm's luxury vehicles. Segmentation allows a business to focus its marketing where it will be most productive.
