An independent shopper who is paid by a company, or the agent of a company, to evaluate one or more of the company's establishments. For example, a restaurant chain may employ mystery shoppers to evaluate the service and food at its restaurants. Mystery shoppers are ordinarily paid a nominal fee in addition to reimbursement of any expenses they incur. Also called secret shopper.
