Government Accountability Office (GAO) business definition

The nonpartisan federal agency that evaluates federal programs, audits federal expenditures, and issues legal opinions. The GAO advises Congress and executive branch heads on how to make government more efficient and effective. Formerly called Government Accounting Office.
