debt-discharge income business definition

Income attributed to a borrower resulting from debt forgiveness by a lender. For example, when a lender forgives a third of the balance on an outstanding debt of $15,000, the borrower has debt-discharge income of $5,000. Debt-discharge income is generally, but not always, taxable, and the borrower should receive a Form 1099-C from the lender.
