base rent business definition

The minimum fixed, periodic payment made by a tenant of a property to the owner of the property. A rental agreement may include provisions that cause the actual rent to be higher than the base rent. For example, a retailer leasing a commercial building may be required to pay the base rent plus a specified percentage of sales. Likewise, a rental agreement may include a provision under which the base rent is adjusted for inflation.
